To read is one of the greatest joys we have but sadly not every child has the access to the wonderful books that we take for granted. That’s why Chorleywood and Gerrards Cross Bookshops started Gift a Book, as a way of giving underprivileged children in Herts and Bucks a new book to love and cherish at Christmas.
We launched Gift a Book last year and we were delighted to have had 333 books purchased, that were then donated to local underprivileged children.
This year Gift a Book will be liaising with local organisations The Dorcas Project and The Castle Fields Children’s Centre and Three Rivers Child’s Centre. All of these offer support and provide many necessities to underprivileged children aged between three and eighteen.
We will also be supporting Storybook Dads, a service allowing prisoners to record a story onto a CD for their children.
How it works…
The next time you come to either of the bookshops, pick a book for the age and gender of your choice, pay at the till and that’s it.
Then the magic bookshop elves will take the book, wrap it up and send it to its new home, ready to be opened and treasured on Christmas Day.
We would really love it if the whole family got involved. Bring in your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, younger siblings etc. and let them chose the book they would like to give to someone this Christmas. If you would like recommendations, one of our lovely bookshop team will be on hand to tell you their favourites and this year’s most popular children’s books.
About the organisations we are working with…
Every year in the UK, over 200,000 children suffer the trauma of parental imprisonment. Storybook Dads and Storybook Mums help to maintain the vital emotional bond between parent and child by enabling parents to make bedtime story CDs, DVDs and other educational gifts for their children. We will be donating books to HM Prison The Mount (Bovingdon).
The Dorcas Project was set up in 2010 by Jo Preston who works as a Health Visitor in the High Wycombe area. The Dorcas Project was created to respond to the need Jo saw in her work with children and families in the High Wycombe area. Wycombe district council reports that somewhere in the region of 15% of children in Wycombe district live in poverty.
The Castle Fields Children’s Centre in High Wycombe is part of the nationwide charity Action for Children, which was founded in England over 147 years ago. Last year they helped 356,000 children, young people and their families and remain the largest voluntary provider of Sure Start Children’s Centres.
Three Rivers West Children’s Centre integrates high quality services and provides information and services to give children aged 0-5 the best start in life. It works in close partnership with other organisations and professionals to coordinate services. Parents, grandparents and carers can access information on childcare, family support, health, outreach, training and employment advice.
Thank you so much to everyone taking part and we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
