Every now and then a book comes along which absolutely blows our minds from the start.  My Dark Vanessa by American, Kate Elizabeth Russell, (out 31/03/20) is one of these.

My Dark Vanessa is a beautifully crafted telling of an unsettling subject matter done with compassion and dignity.  It’s important we point out that the subject matter of the book deals with teacher/student underage relationships and the abuse of power which comes with that. 

In the book, Vanessa Wye is fifteen years old when she first has sex with her English teacher. She is now thirty-two and the teacher, Jacob Strane, has just been accused of sexual abuse by another former student of his. Vanessa is horrified by this news, because she is quite certain that the relationship she had with Strane wasn’t abuse. It was love. But now she is being asked to redefine the great love story of her life – her great sexual awakening – as something completely different.
